A New Medium

This summer I treated myself to a new toy—but more importantly a creative facilitator—by picking up a Pentax medium format camera. It is my first film camera, and I have not been this giddy about photography since I sat in Barnes & Noble reading how-to books, awaiting my first digital body to arrive years ago. I am desirous of what should be a fresh challenge for me, and anxious to learn and cultivate new skills—all with the hope that I can create, and be pushed to create, in different and interesting ways.

Below are a few selected scans from my first two rolls.
And check back often for new exposures here on the blog!

Out In the Badlands

Here are a few photos I took on my tour through the West. Maybe I'll get to a longer narrative later... but basically America is stunning, and maybe surprisingly so because I am under the strongly-held belief that living in Los Angeles is to be locked in a sensory-deprivation chamber. Or to quote one of my favorite bands, Empire! Empire! (I Was a Lonely Estate), Los Angeles is

Where a sea of concrete swallows everything... Let the whole damn coast fall in.

Places visited (but not exclusive to): South Dakota, Montana, Wyoming, Idaho, Utah, Yellowstone National Park, & Grand Teton National Park.

New Section, Another Venture, & More to Look Forward to

I have a new section up on the site entitled Still Life, which features a series of photos my best friend Perrin Jones and I created while on a visit to the beautiful Pacific Northwest. You can find his work here or on Instagram at @perrinelijah. A special thanks to JD White for allowing us to create these images at his studio in the wonderful Central Eastside district of Portland, Oregon.

This was my fourth visit to this part of the country and one that has cemented my everlasting affection for it. Below are a few of my favorite snapshots from the trip. Travel has a funny way of coinciding with major shifts in my life, as this venture was simply one of many recent ones that have helped me move through and beyond a bit of heartbreak or emotional instability. Whether it be timely fatalism or just lucky coincidence, I am grateful for the people I have and places I've gone to in my life.

I have big things planned for me and photography this Autumn and cannot wait to share them with you all.

Stay tuned, and thank you.

We're halfway through the year already, so I'd like to share a quick update on what I've been enjoying musically in 2016 thus far. I'll even throw in some personal disappointments, and what I'm anticipating for the rest of the year.

Share it, enjoy it, and happy listening!

In-Studio Mischief

Last week my best friend came down from Portland, Oregon, so we hit up the Huntington Beach Photo Studio (a shared space with Prince Productions, whom I work for) for some in-studio mischief. It just so happens my mate is an aspiring photographer as well, so ideas and a workflow came relatively natural (despite a two-hour lighting delay). We messed around with Portraiture and Still-Life, came out with a few cool things—some not so cool—but above all-else had a great time shooting together. I look forward to future collaborations with him, and in the meantime you can check out his work here.

Here's a few things we captured that day.

A Venture to Israel

I recently returned from a visit to Israel as part of a Taglit Birthright: Mayanot group. The experience was of such personal reward, and my tenderness for it grows with each passing day. I intend to soon write a sort of accompanying monologue, but I find words would only diminish my thoughts. As Stephen King once put it: words shrink things that seemed limitless when they were in your head to no more than living size when they're brought out. That said, I hope in this case these photos will be worth more than a thousand words. This is a small collection of some of my favorite photographs taken on my journey. All shots taken with my Canon 6D, 35mm f/2.

New Website!

Welcome everyone to the new and improved JASONSEANWEISS.COM!

New photos and blog entries will come more regularly, along with updates and improvements to the site. Looking forward to what's in store this year and I hope you are too!
